Three people have been confirmed dead in a shooting in the centre of a Swedish city, police say.
Several members of the public reported hearing gunshots near Vaksala Square in central Uppsala, about 60 kilometres north of Stockholm, about 5pm on Tuesday (1am AEST).
Uppsala police initially said several people had been injured with what looked like gunshot wounds.

About two and a half hours later they said three people had died and the shooting was being treated as a murder.
A large area had been cordoned off as police investigated the scene.
Sweden was shocked in February this year when 10 people includings the gunman were killed in a mass shooting at an education centre in Orebro, about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm.
It was described as the worst in the country's history.
