"Last night we welcomed our little boy into the world," Higgins said on Instagram.

"A huge thank-you to the amazing midwives, nurses and doctors for their care and kindness.

"We're both looking forward to getting to dote on the newest member of the family — forever grateful for all the love and support we've received."

Earlier last year, a Federal Court judge found, on the burden of proof required in a civil trial, that Bruce Lehrmann sexually assaulted Higgins in the Parliament House office of their then-boss Senator Linda Reynolds in March 2019.

Lehrmann has denied that any sexual activity occurred between himself and Higgins, and has appealed the judge's findings against him.

Higgins released a lengthy statement after the ruling. In it, she said:

"It has been five years of criminal and civil trials and government inquiries for the truth to finally be heard.

"It is now time to heal."
