Mum, daughter 'poisoned' in Fiji land in Australia

A mother and daughter who were hospitalised after drinking suspected tainted cocktails at a Fiji resort have touched back down in Sydney.

Georgia Sandoe-Simpson, 19, and her mother Tanya, 49, landed in Australia overnight.

The two other Australian women who had been hospitalised in the incident have been discharged from hospital but remain in Fiji.

They are expected to return home as soon as possible.

The four Australians were among seven people taken to hospital after consuming drinks at the Warwick Fiji resort.

The seven people were aged from 18 to 56 and had nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms after consuming a cocktail, Mai TV said.

The 56-year-old was under constant surveillance in hospital, the public broadcaster said.

The luxury hotel at the centre of the suspected alcohol poisoning incident told 9news.com.au they were taking the matter "very seriously."

It also said it has checked its CCTV and it's believed samples of the drink ingredients have been sent to Australia for analysis.

"This is a big, busy resort, there was a lot of people there, we expect around 100,000 tourists in Fiji around this month," Fiji Tourism chief executive Brent Hill said.

"So they're obviously very distressed and baffled as to how this could have occurred."

The government's Smartraveller website has updated its advice for Fiji visitors to be wary of "potential risks" around drink spiking and methanol consumption.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers yesterday added his voice to the warnings.

"If Australians are travelling, be very alert to the potential risks, in this case around drink spiking and alcohol poisoning," he said.

"Don't leave your drinks unattended. Pay attention when your drinks are being mixed."
