Man charged after AFL umpire hit by bottle in Melbourne

A man will face court after he allegedly threw a bottle at an umpire during an AFL match in Melbourne over the weekend.

Umpire Steven Piperno appeared bloodied after he was hit by a flying bottle during the Carlton-St Kilda clash on Sunday.

The incident took place just before halftime.

Piperno was attended to by medical staff at the stadium.

Police have now charged a 23-year-old Northcote man with throwing the bottle.

He was bailed and will attend court on November 1.
