Ambulances, trucks in five-vehicle pile-up on Queensland highway

Two ambulances and three trucks have been caught in a pile-up near Gladstone on the Queensland coast.

A B-double truck crashed on the Bruce Highway at about 2am, which caused two other B-doubles to collide with it.

It's understood conditions were foggy and smoky, amid hazard reduction burns nearby.

Two ambulances responding to the crash then also collided at the site.

A witness said one of the trucks had tried to reverse off the road, forcing the ambulances into the embankment.

The drivers of the trucks were trapped before being cut free.

All three were taken to hospital. 9News understands they were all conscious at the time.

The ambulance drivers are also believed to not be seriously hurt.

The highway remains closed in both directions, with traffic backed up for kilometres and delays expected for hours to come.
