A junior police officer has rescued a driver who was found trapped in a submerging car after crashing into a lagoon off a popular beach in Sydney's north overnight.
Police were called to Pittwater Road at Dee Why about 12.30am over reports a car had left the road, crashed through buses and drove into Dee Why Lagoon.
They arrived to find a 60-year-old woman - the driver and only occupant - stuck inside the partially submerged VW Golf sedan.

A female officer rushed into the water to free the woman from the car, which police said was quickly taking on water.
The driver was freed in the nick of time as the car fully sank shortly later.
She was examined by paramedics and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for observation, where she is recovering.
The area's acting inspector Adrian De Visser praised probationary constable Kiesha McJannet for her life-saving actions.

"Probationary Constable McJannet has only been in the New South Wales Police Force since June 2023 – her selfless actions of entering the water and saving a woman from a precarious position is deserving of praise," he said.
The car remains submerged in the lagoon and crews will attempt to retrieve it later today.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
