Emergency alert issued as WA cyclone looms

A cyclone warning has been issued for Western Australians as the Bureau of Meteorolgy warns that Cyclone Lincoln is expected to re-form today.

The ex-cyclone is currently a tropical low off the coast of Western Australia.

But the bureau rates it an 85 per cent chance to redevelop into a tropical cyclone today.

It's then expected to hit the western Pilbara coast and northern Gascoyne coast on Saturday.

Strong winds of up to 100km/hr, and 140km/hr in places, and heavy rain are expected throughout that day, before the storm rapidly weakens on Sunday.

Western Australians have been urged to stock up and food and water and get their emergency kits ready.

The SES is also ramping up resources in preparation.

The state government's emergency website has issued a blue alert saying while there is no immediate danger, residents need to prepare.

The alert covers people between Mardie and Wooramel, who are living in coastal communities or on offshore islands.
