Four rescued from rough surf at Bondi Beach

Four people have been rescued from rough surf at Sydney's Bondi Beach last night.

Authorities were called to the popular tourist destination about 7.30 pm after receiving reports multiple people were caught in a rip.

Two men were rushed to hospital after the near-drowning in a stable condition.

The two others rescued were able to return home without treatment.

"We initially thought these people were in cardiac arrest but they had already been brought from the water by lifeguards," NSW Ambulance Inspector Mike Corlis said.

"They were conscious and one was vomiting quite a bit. Both have been transported to hospital."

Lifesaver James McLennan said volunteers had been training nearby when they heard a witness scream for help.

"It was a great effort from the team," he said.

"There were a lot of young members there who jumped into the job of lifesavers.

"It was probably one of the first rescues they have done especially after patrol."
