Woman dies after being hit by two cars in Melbourne's south-east

A woman has died after being hit by two cars in Melbourne's south-east overnight.

The woman, who is yet to be formally identified, was struck by two cars at the intersection of Hallenstein Street and Hopkins Street in Footscray about 10pm.

Police have said they are unsure how the incident unfolded.

Its not known whether the woman was attempting to cross the road or whether she was hit while on the footpath.

Paramedics tried to save the woman but she died at the scene.

The drivers of the two vehicles involved were uninjured and remained at the scene.

They are being questioned by police.

Police are seeking witnesses to the crash, and asking anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

There have been 266 lives lost on Victoria's roads this year.
