A lion has been sedated and captured after being filmed padding the streets of a town near the Italian capital of Rome.
The escaped circus lion prompted a warning from authorities on Saturday afternoon (not long after midnight Sunday AEDT).
Alessandro Grando, the mayor of the seaside town of Ladispoli, about 35 kilometres west of Rome, said he hoped the incident could help put an end to animal exploitation in circuses.

The mayor, who warned locals not to travel while the lion was on the loose, said the animal was quickly tracked to a nearby waterway.
The feline was eventually sedated with the help of various police forces, circus staff and volunteers, Grando said on social media late on Saturday (early Sunday AEDT).
The mayor said he wasn't responsible for approving the circus and that his autarchy had unsuccessfully tried in 2017 to ban circuses with animals from the town.
