Desperate search underway for fisherman missing from croc hotspot

A desperate search operation is underway in Queensland's Far North after a fisherman disappeared at a national park known to be occupied by large crocodiles.

Police confirmed the 65-year-old vanished at 3.30pm yesterday at the Kennedy River at Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, about 340km north-west of Cairns.

9News understands the man, from Laura, was believed to be fishing with a friend at the time of his disappearance.

The man's friend reported his absence to authorities and described hearing a "splashing sound" at the time of the disappearance, reports suggest.

Police, the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) and as well as the Rescue 510 helicopter, led searches yesterday evening and at first light this morning.

So far, no trace of the man has been found.

Department of Environment and Science (DES) Wildlife Officers are assisting with the search.
