The fatal drowning of a man and rescue of two others have prompted safety warnings about the hidden dangers rips can cause.
The three men were pulled from the water at a beach in Cronulla, in Sydney's south yesterday after getting caught in a rip about 1.50pm at an unpatrolled beach.
Surf Life Saving Sydney Duty Officer Jackson Towns told Weekend Today that it was concerning to see many people swimming outside the flags on beaches across the country.

"If you want to head to the beach, please swim between the red and yellow flags," he said.
More than 50 people have died this year across Australia, according to the Royal Life Saving Summer Drowning Toll.
About 14 of those drownings have occurred in New South Wales.
"With the hot conditions at the moment, we have seen lots of people swimming at unpatrolled beaches where many of these (drownings) have occurred," Towns said.
"Rips are a big (danger), which we saw yesterday, the men were pulled in the rip.
"Rips are a main contributor to drownings at the moment. "
